Do you have this error? “The User Profile Service failed the logon”

From around September 2013 we have been regularly having customers call us about problems logging in stating “there computer is asking them for a password which they do not know” or “they know there password is correct but not working”. The majority of these people will have the following message on their screen “User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded”
It has been difficult to pinpoint the cause of this problem but I believe that it is most likely due to an issue with a Windows update or an issue with an AVG antivirus update corrupting the user profile but neither of these are confirmed.
