As of the 26th May 2012 will your website be breaking the law and subject to a possible £500,000 fine.

On the 26th May 2011 a new EU originated law came into effect that requires all website owners to make significant changes to their sites and may fundamentally change the web browsing experience for everybody.
This Cookie Law is an amended privacy legislation that requires websites to obtain informed consent from visitors before they can store or retrieve any information on a computer or any other web connected device. In the UK website owners were given 12 months to become compliant with this law which ends on the 26th May 2012.

The actual wording of the Regulations
1. Subject to paragraph (4), a person shall not store or gain information, or to gain access to information stored, in the terminal equipment of a subscriber or user unless the requirements of paragraph (2) are met.

2. The requirements are that the subscriber or user of that terminal equipment -
a. is provided with clear and comprehensive information about the purposes of the storage of, or access to, that information; and
b. has given his or her consent.

3. Where an electronic communications network is used by the same person to store or access information in the terminal equipment of a subscriber or user on more than one occasion, it is sufficient for the purposes of this regulation that the requirements of paragraph (2) are met in respect of the initial use.

3A. For the purposes of paragraph (2), consent may be signified by a subscriber who amends or sets controls on the internet browser which the subscriber uses or by using another application or programme to signify consent.

4. Paragraph (1) shall not apply to the technical storage of, or access to, information -
a. for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network; or
b. where such storage or access is strictly necessary for the provision of an information society service requested by the subscriber or user.

What is clear is that many website owners are not prepared and in many cases have never ever heard of the cookie law.
At Norfolk Computers we are offering a free cookie evaluation for websites under 20 pages (subject to demand) and where your site is non-compliant we offering to correct the problem for £10 per page.

For further information see the ICO (Information Commissioners Office) website.

Windows 8

Windows 8 is a radical rethinking of Windows although the core workings are very similar to windows 7, The main difference you will notice is the addition of the start screen which also replaces the start menu that we have seen since windows 95. This has been replaced by an interface very similar to the one of the Windows Phone 7 making windows easier to use on tablets. The app on this screen includes Camera, Xbox, Mail, Calendar, People, Messaging and Photos. Microsoft is also introducing a Windows App Store like that of Apple and Google Play.

You may also notice that the new Internet Explorer 10 has two versions, one for touch screen and one for a mouse and keyboard machine, that look and feel very different.

In my view Windows 8 seems to be aimed at tablets and phones. And on a regular PC or laptop while the new interface looks good it appears to be hiding the windows that we all know.

Many people when setting up broadband for the first time have difficulties in understanding the correct way to connect up their router which can lead to either the broadband working intermittently or even not at all. I have put together a three simple rules to help people resolve problems that they may be having.

1. All telephone sky boxes and anything else that uses the telephone must be connected through a filter. This includes anything connected to other telephone outlets.
2. Try to avoid extension cables where possible
3. Do not connect filters to other filters.

Having had a chance to use a chromebook I feel that this would be great for the average user that wants to go online send email and type the odd document. Being cloud based you have none of the usual worries about making backups. To give you an idea of what it is like try using only Googles Chrome browser and its apps for a few days to see how you get on.

If you have just bought a new pc and have discovered that it only comes with a 30 day trial of MS Office you may be looking for a cheaper alternative. Two very good alternatives are

Open Office
Google Documents

Open Office is free to download and is very similar to use to MS Office 2003 and is compatible with all other major office suites

Google Documents is also free to use, all you need to do is register for a free Google account. As this is a completely online solution there is no need to install anything. You can also use it on any other computer simply by logging and all your document will be there. It works in much the same way as other word processors etc. and has many of the usual features.

I am often asked what is the best free antivirus software. While there are many out there to choose from the top two that I would recommend are.

AVG Free
Microsoft Security Essentials

The main reason for this choice is because they both provide reasonable protection, have no registration when downloading and they do not consume too much of the systems resources.
